Outer Cement Coating of M.S. Pipes (Gunniting)

There are two methods are adopting to do this guniting (a) Manual Guniting (b) Brush coating. The General procedure of weld mesh fixing for both Guniting and Brush Coating.

Weld Mesh Fixing

Normally 50 x 50 x 2.3 (13 SWG) weld mesh will be wound over the outer periphery of pipe as reinforcement.

Cover blocks 50 x 50 x 10 mm thick normally used to fix below the weld mesh and there should be 10 no’s cover blocks are to be placed every square meter of pipe outer.

The circular weld mesh the overlap should be 50 to 75 mm in circumferentially and 75to 100 mm in longitudinally. All the adjacent coils the staggered to be maintained for good grip.

The weld mesh should not touch over the outer surface of the pipe the 10 mm gap should be maintained by using cover blocks properly.

Outer pipe should be cleaned by wire brush to remove the dust and rust before winding the weld mesh.

The weld meshes are to be tightened properly so that no loose fixing will not be allowed. All meshes to be prepared uniform length.

Wooden supports (100Thick) will be placed below the pipe both ends before winding the weld mesh.

After winding the wed mesh the pipe should not keep over the ground or roll over the ground.

Fixing weld mesh the joints should be staggered.

Manual Guniting By Compressor And Gun

Normally 25 mm thick cement coating will be done in all sizes of pipes and cement fine aggregate ratio will be 1:3 and the sufficient water will be allowed in theGun i.e. the exit of mixture.

The gunMan will be sufficient skill to do the job.The compressor pressure will be 4 to 6KSCto apply the guniting mixture.

The first day 2/3 rd. of pipe will be applied the coating and the thickness will be checked by a gauge during its wet or green stage so that we can achieve uniform thickness in all surfaces.

The next day the pipe will be rolled to ground gently and the remaining 1/3 rd portion to come [in top to do the balance guniting.

Now also the thickness and ratio all parameters are to be checked and the compressor pressure to be maintained 4 to 6KSC.

After completion of 1/3 rd. coating the pipe has to send to curing yard and curing by manual or sprinkler will be done from next day i.e. third day of starting guniting.

AGunitingRegister has to be maintained containsDate,TimeCementRatio,Weld mesh used, overlap, cover block and curing period.
